How Can Color Combinations Be Used in Painting a Home's Interior?

Are you looking for a way to add character to a room in your house?  This can be accomplished by utilizing color combinations rather than just painting an entire room one color.  Choosing more than one color for a room can seem intimidating and challenging.  Fortunately, there’s a variety of ways to utilize the perfect color combinations for any room.  The best way to be confident you made the right color choices is to make use of the color wheel, which is also something designers depend on all the time.

Deciding on a color scheme can be a perplexing task, which is why it’s important to get a grasp on the basic color wheel and how it works.  The color wheel is a visual representation of the full color spectrum, and is made up of 12 colors.  These colors are classified into three categories:

  1. Primary Colors: Red, Yellow, and Blue
  2. Secondary Colors: Orange, Green, and Violet
  3. Tertiary Colors: Yellow-Orange, Red-Orange, Red-Violet, Blue-Violet, Blue-Green, and Yellow-Green.

Now that you know the colors here are three common ways to incorporate them into pleasing color combinations.

Monochromatic Colors

If you’re looking to achieve a calm feel for a room a monochromatic scheme is your best bet.  This color scheme is basically one color in varying intensities from light to dark.  For a room with a fabulous view use this color scheme to frame the scene, at least on the wall with the largest window.  It will complement the natural setting in the forefront, and best match nature-inspired colors.

Analogous Colors

This particular color scheme consists of two to six colors that sit next to each other on the wheel.  These colors provide a more subtle variation in color, as opposed to a more striking difference created by complementary colors.  An example of an analogous color combination would be red and orange.

Complementary Colors

This color scheme includes hues that are directly across from each other on the wheel.  They should be used if you want to go for high-contrast color.  Pairings of complementary colors can be used in a range of intensities for a bolder look that attracts attention.
